Mental Attitude: Minor Traumatic Brain Injury and Second-Impact Syndrome.
Each year, over one million Americans experience a minor traumatic brain injury (mTBI) with a fall or motor vehicle collision as the primary cause. Symptoms of an mTBI include headache, fatigue, dizziness, anxiety, impaired cognition, and memory deficits. For 15-25% of mTBI sufferers, these issues can take up to a year to resolve. Researchers state that mTBI sufferers should be counseled on their susceptibility to second-impact syndrome if another accident should occur while they continue to experience residual symptoms from their initial injury. According to study co-author Dr. Andrew J. Rosenbaum, "Second-impact syndrome can have devastating consequences, including rapid-onset swelling of the brain; worsening function of the brain, spinal cord, muscles or nerves; and instability of normal body functions." American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, October 2013

Health Alert: Drug Warning Ads May Encourage Purchasing.
Pharmaceutical commercials that warn consumers about serious side effects may actually encourage viewers to purchase the drug as long as the opportunity to purchase the medication takes place at a later time. Researchers say the reason for this is because the psychological distance created by the delay between exposure to the commercial and the decision to purchase makes the side effects appear abstract and ultimately consumers see the warning as an indication of the firm's honesty and or trustworthiness. Psychological Science, September 2013

Diet: Warning about Resveratrol Supplements.
Individuals with multiple sclerosis are being warned against taking resveratrol supplements as a new study found that consuming the supplement worsened multiple sclerosis-like neuropathology and inflammation.

Exercise: United States Walks Less than Other Nations.
A global survey found the majority of Americans do not walk at least 30 minutes each day. The survey was administered in six countries: Brazil, China, India, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States (US). Results revealed that in the US only about 33% of adults walk the recommended 30 minutes each day, compared with about 50% of adults in Brazil and India. World Heart Federation, September 2013

Chiropractic: Patients with Back Pain Respond to Chiropractic Over Medical Care.
A study compared one-month outcomes for 93 patients who received chiropractic care and 45 patients who received medical care to treat their chronic low back pain. Patients treated with chiropractic care showed better overall improvement and satisfaction after one month compared to patients treated by a family physician. Chiropractic patients showed significant decreases in pain severity, functional disability, and pain quality, while medical patients showed minimal improvements in the first two measures and a worsening in pain quality.

Wellness/Prevention: The Link Between Neonatal Infections and Later Behavioral Problems.
Scientists have known of a link between infections in newborns and motor coordination problems well into young adulthood, but until now they did not know the mechanism. Recent research has found that a neonatal infection can cause inflammation in the still developing brain, depriving it of the iron it needs for oligodendrocyte development. Oligodendrocytes are the cells that produce myelin. As noted in a previous daily health update, myelin is the insulating material found on nerve cell projections in the brain and spinal cord that's responsible for allowing electrical impulses to move from cell to cell, similar to the insulation around electrical wires. The authors of the study speculate that a maternal diet high in antioxidants may shield a newborn's brain from the effects of inflammation in the event of an infection. Journal of Neuroscience, October 2013
