Mental Attitude: Prenatal Depression Linked to Offspring Depression.
A new study shows that children are more likely to have depression at age 18 if their mothers were depressed during pregnancy. The study concludes: "The findings have important implications for the nature and timing of interventions aimed at preventing depression in the offspring of depressed mothers. Health Alert: Quality Years and Stroke.
Researchers in the United Kingdom followed 748 stroke patients over five years to measure the impact of a stoke on quality of life. On average, patients who suffered a minor stroke could expect to lose 2.06 of the next five years to poor health, complications, and/or death. For moderate strokes, the quality years lost increased to 3.35 years and jumped to 4.3 years for severe strokes. According to Dr. Peter Rothwell, a professor with the UK's John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, "Our study should serve as a wake-up call that we need more funding and research for stroke treatments and secondary stroke prevention measures to improve quality of life in stroke survivors."
